Voice notes on DropAsecret, with a mask that hides your voice

Say it out loud instead of typing. DropAsecret's voice masks change how you sound on your own phone, before anything is sent. Here's how they work.

Some things are easier to say than to type. DropAsecret lets you send a voice note instead of a text, either in your own voice or through a voice mask that changes how you sound.

Recording a voice note

In the message box, tap to record. A voice note can be up to 30 seconds long, or 60 seconds on Plus and Creator Pro.

On the free plan, and if you're sending without an account, you can send 3 voice notes a week. Plus has no limit. Link owners can reply with voice notes too.

Picking a voice

After recording, you choose how you sound:

  • My voice: no change.
  • High, Deep and Robot: the masks that come free with every account.
  • Chipmunk, Helium, Mouse, Baby, Kid, Cartoon and Giant: extra voices on Plus.

You can try each one and listen back before you send, so you hear exactly what the other person will hear.

How the mask works

The masks change the pitch of your voice and its shape, the qualities that make a voice sound like a particular person. Robot also adds a low ringing tone, like the Daleks.

The important part is where this happens. The mask is applied on your own phone, before anything is sent. Your plain recording stays in the page's memory on your device and is never uploaded. Only the masked version leaves your phone, so DropAsecret never receives your real voice.

Honest limits

A mask makes your voice harder to recognise, not impossible. And what you say can give you away as easily as how you sound: a phrase you always use, or something only you would know. If staying anonymous matters, think about your words as well as your voice.

Where voice notes are kept

Voice notes are stored as audio files in private storage. Only you and the person you sent them to can play them, through links that stop working after a few minutes. If the person who received them deletes the conversation, the messages and voice notes are removed for both of you.

For link owners

  • Turn voice notes off. If you only want text, switch voice notes off in Settings, and people can only send you written messages.
  • Share one. You can post a voice note as a short vertical video, with the voice playing, for your Status or Stories. It shows nothing about who sent it.

Want to hear it for yourself? Get your link and ask a friend to send you one.
